It seems the National Executives of the governing New Patriotic(NPP) are either sleeping on the job or they’re doing the bidding of the Vice President of Ghana,Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia to enable him lead the party as flagbearer by all means after Nana Akufo-Addo in an unfair contest.
It has been widely published that all flagbearer hopefuls of the party and their supporters have been banned from campaigning for the position until they are permitted to do so or risk facing sanctions.
Dr.Nana Ayew Afriyie,Effiduase-Asokore MP
However, information gathered so far indicates that the camp of Dr.Bawumia is openly campaigning on a religious and tribal card as the leadership of the party looks on.
Recently Hon. Dr.Nana Ayew Afriyie, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Effiduase-Asokore in the Ashanti openly declared for Dr.Bawumia.
According to him,NPP is going to show the way by electing first Muslim flagbearer and partner him with a Christian ahead of 2024 polls.
He told Wontumi TV/Radio morning show host, Oheneba Nana Aseidu that everywhere he goes in his constituency and campaign, the chiefs, NPP supporters are all saying they want Bawumia. That it is now a natural movement that many Asantes are rooting for Bawumia .
The Effiduase-Asokore MP said once a upon time,NPP has to choose a Muslim and partner him with a Christian. .Even in Asanteman go and make your research and you would find out that they love Bawumia.Your going to see a stronger movement saying that we want Bawumia(a muslim). At times people say Asantes don’t remember but we do remember and we (Asantes) are leaving in peace and have Anloga among other tribes here. Adding that Asantes wants to prove that we’re not tribalitic.
It would be recalled that Hon.Kwabena Nsenkire, the Ashanti regional chairman in meeting with polling station executives few weeks ago said they were going to ensure that Dr.Bawumia becomes unopposed NPP flagbearer .
Mr.John Boadu-NPP general Secretary
That they would also ensure Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi, the incumbent Ashanti regional chairman and the incumbent polling station executives also go unopposed in the forthcoming party elections.
The Angry NPP activists who have expressed concerned about the current happenings in the elephant family said, as if that was enough for the National Executive Committee and National Executives of the to act in order for others not to follow their example, Dr.Gideon Boako, the Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Dr.Bawumia and other government officials have been accused of intensifying the religious and tribal card campaign in Bono region and other parts of the country.
The Vice president himself was captured in a video recently urging his Muslims brothers and sisters to pray for the former President, John Mahama (a Christian ) to convert to Islam. An assertion his listeners at the program rejected.
Many political watchers and leading members of NPP have warned that Dr.Bawumia and his team was threading on a dangerous campaign strategy. They are therefore calling on the leadership of the party to act since religious and tribal politics have tendency to create confusion in the country
.A founding Member of NPP said “if the next day another flagbearer hopeful team start meeting delegates and campaign on religious and tribal card or line would the national executives act? Or Our national executives are telling us, they have not heard a whole MP sat on Ashanti regional Chairman’s media house campaigned on religious and tribal line but nothing has been done about it!. The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party has reminded party members about the need to abide by the party’s rules at all times.
John Boadu’s reminder followed subtle campaigns being undertaken for some presidential hopefuls by some party members at the party’s delegates conference in the North East Region.
According to him, it is not advisable for party members to disregard the code of conduct of the party which could aid in ensuring the party has a smooth transition during the search for a new flagbearer.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, he said that “they (party members) are the ones who complained about presidential hopefuls testing waters too early in the year and asked us to get the National Executive Committee Council to put together a code of conduct and we have done that.”
He stated that it is not right for these members to turn around and ignore the same code which bars aspirants and their supporters from openly campaigning for flagbearer hopefuls prior to the lifting of the ban. This comes after the Chereponi constituency chairman addressing delegates at the NPP conference, openly endorsed Vice President Dr Bawumia for the 2024 elections during his speech.Meanwhile, John Boadu stated that the code of conduct had not been breached until the Chereponi chairman’s statement, who felt he could make his intentions known because it was the home of the Vice President. But, any party member or leader who breaches the code could face the disciplinary committee if a complaint is lodged, he stated.
He told Evans Mensah that “I reiterated the fact that we still have to continue to abide by the code of conduct set by ourselves and help in ensuring that our transition becomes smoother than expected.”Meanwhile, leading figures of the party including Boakye Agyarko, Vice President Dr. Bawumia, Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten and the Agric Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto are gunning to bear the flag of the party going into the 2024 polls.
Flashback! Don’t campaign – NPP warns flag bearer hopefuls
The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu, has entreated all flagbearer hopefuls of the party to stop campaigning ahead of time.
Speaking at the Ashanti regional branch of the party’s delegates conference held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021 at Achaakrom in the Ejisu Municipality, Mr Boadu said campaigning early may affect and distract the work of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Mr Boadu said although it is acceptable for the flag bearer hopefuls to splash their posters around, they should not start campaigning. He called on the hopefuls to observe the rules and regulations regarding the internal elections of the party.
“We see posters around and that is acceptable but no one should start campaigning”, he warned.“If you start campaigning, you’ll distract the president from the mandate given to him”, Mr Boadu added, explaining: “He will be distracted by these campaigns by our own people, so, I urge you all to observe these rules and regulations”.Mr Boadu also noted that the party will hold its National Delegates Conference in the Ashanti Region on the 18th, 19th and 20th of December this year.
He advised members of the party to unite, as they prepare for the internal polls.source: ghanaweb.com
