The chief of Kwapra, a fast growing community in the Suame Municipality of Ashanti, Baafuo Adu Gyamfi Kumanin, has urged the government to bring more development to the area. He said there is urgent need for good road network, schools and other social interventions in the area. Kwaprahene told this paper, shortly after he had celebrated his 45 years on the throne that Kwapra is renowned and famous community yet lacks development.
According to him, apart from the main road that connects Kronum to Kwapra which was tarred by the former President John Dramani Mahama administration, its town roads are very poor and the government must do something as quickly as possible.
“Even this road in question which was tarred by Mahama era after former President Kufuor had constructed the drains needs to be asphalted because after the first coat nothing was done again until today ” he said.
He explained that the current government is doing his best to bring more development to accelerate growth in some parts of the country which Suame Municipality is one of them.
He said areas like Anonmangye, Bremang and Suame itself within the Municipality are getting their fair share of national cake but he humbly appealed to the government through the Municipal Assembly to also focus their attention to Kwapra. On what he has been able to do to assist the people of Kwapra, he said, he was enstooled in 1976 when he was just 28 years. At that time according to him, Kwapra land was typically forest and their place of living was Kronum in the same Suame Municipality.
According to him, the people of Kronum were intimidating them to go and settle in their land, Kwapra. The Chief said said, they succumbed to the pressure and in 1991 he started layout of Kwapra together with his sub-chiefs constructed roads, provided electricity and other social interventions.
He noted that, he has also released land for the construction of the Police Station which is in operation near Kronum barrier to bring crime under control.
He said similar lands have also been released at Kwapra new site to construct another Police Station since the area has expanded to tame crime activities. According to kwaprahene, there is no government school within Kwapra community and as a result of that another vast land has been earmarked for the government to build school be it basic, secondary or tertiary.
On health, Kwaprahene said, he released lands to the Ghana National Petroleum Company ( GNPC ) for the construction of clinic of which it is completed and handed over to the Suame Municipal Assembly awaiting for the medical equipments. He however, bemoaned the current nature of Kwapra market which was built some years ago under the supervision of private entity under Build, Operate and Transfer ( B O T ).
He urged the government through the Municipal Assembly to renegotiate with the Contractor either for the government to take full control or revert to Nananom to undertake different project. He thanked his su- chiefs and the entire people of the area for their full support that has made Kwapra one of the peaceful areas not only in Ashanti but Ghana as a whole.Story by Charles Ampong
