An appeal has been made to the President of the Republic of Ghana,Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo to publicly endorse the patronage of certified Herbal medicines in the country so as to encourage many Ghanaians who still hold wrong perception about the local herbs to embrace it.
Dr.Ebenezer Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for EBENAGE Herbal Production and Consult who is the brain behind the much talked about herbal medicine “HEPA PLUS Mixture” made the urgent appeal in an interview on the sidelines of a press conference by the Universal Plant Medicine and Traditional Healers Association held At Golden Tulip-Kumasi.
According to him, the president’s endorsement will go a long way to instill more confidence in Ghanaians who are now contemplating on the use and safety of herbal medicines.
“We’re pleading that just as the president (Nana Akufo-Addo) added his voice to the use of Dawadawa,Kontomire and other locally made vegetables and there is clear evidence of positive effect on the economy after the President’s message the President should do same for herbal medicines especially the ones certified by Food and Drugs Authority(FDA)”.
Dr.Agyemang who recently graduated with Masters in Public Health (Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety) from the College of Health Science of KNUST said currently many herbal medicine practitioners in the country are embarking on more research to add more science to the herbs as compared to the olden days. Adding that, Ghanaians should have more confidence in the FDA certified herbal medicines in the country.
He said FDA apart from series of trainings for the practitioners also makes sure that before any herbal medicine comes out to the market it would have gone through all the necessary scientific tests and many of these processes were not even available in the past! The CEO of ‘Hepa plus Mixture’ who doubles as a member of the Association revealed that Ghana is fortunate to has started offering degree programmes in herbal medicine.
He said as pioneers of adding science and evidence based herbal medicine not only in West Africa but the whole of Africa, it would be suicidal if we sit down as a country and watch herbal medicine move at a tortoise pace.
”This industry holds potency to help create jobs to reduce the unemployment rate in the country also boost our economy and it is high time all stakeholders join the crusade to promote the usage of herbal medicine in the country.
So our simple appeal to the first gentleman of the land,Nana Addo is for him to officially publicly endorse the use of certified herbal Medicine in the country”, he added.
The Universal Plant Medicine and Traditional Healers Association are appealing to the President of Republic of Ghana,Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to endorse herbal medicine to encourage more Ghanaians patronize it.
Dr Gyedu Benjamin, the CEO of GYEDU HERBAL who doubles the Chairman of Universal Plant Medicine and Traditional Healers Association and Dr lssah Nyamekye who doubles as the CEO of AFRICAN CHAMPION HERBAL CLINIC respectively maintained their position that the President’s public endorsement for the usage of herbal medicine holds the key to boost their business to help expand the economy.
According to the leadership of the Association, herbal medicine has potency of boosting Ghanaian economy not only fighting several diseases but poverty and unemployment situation in the country.
Dr.Issah Nyamekye disclosed that currently they have a membership of over 20,000 across the country out of which 5,000 members are now graduates given a strong indication of herbal medicine practitioners’ determination of adding more science towards continuous improvement of their work.
He admitted that, though promotion of herbal medicine usage has been on the drawing board for many years now but they believed that President’s personal intervention this time round could boost or inspire the confidence of many Ghanaians who still hold wrong notion about the efficacy of herbal medicine.
